Mary Mary Quite Contrary

Mary Mary Quite Contrary

Mary Mary quite contrary,
How does your garden grow?
With silver bells, and cockle shells,
And pretty maids all in a row.

Origin

Opinion is split on the references in “Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary,” first published in 1744 in Tommy Thumb’s Pretty Song Book. One theory suggests a reference to Mary Tudor, the infamous “Bloody Mary,” daughter of Henry VIII, and her reign of terror over Protestants in mid-16th-century England. Another theory refers to Mary, Queen of Scots; and a third suggests a religious allegory. The English rhyme’s author is unknown.
